FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week ushered in the elements of nature and indigeneity in global Indian wear

After two years of restraint, the physical show of  FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week concluded at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi with a range of irresistible collections by top designers inspired by nature, traditional crafts, and classical mural painting.

Designer Rahul Mishra opened the show with his collection titled The Enchanted Garden at the Italian Embassy on March 23. His collection was no less than a hand experience and fantastical imagination which imitates nature and its elements through various applications of handcraft, forming arrangements of Himalayan poppies, foxgloves, calla lilies amongst others, onto the surface.

The event was graced with the lively presence of doyens like Tarun Tahiliani, Varun Bahl, Manish Malhotra, Shivan & Narresh, Shantanu & Nikhil among others. Here’s a glimpse at how designers use their imagination to integrate indigenous culture into their collections.

Shivan & Narresh
The new Fresconian Series by the designer duo borrows from the classic painterly quality of fresco murals that lace the walls of the Shekhawati region in Rajashtan. Spread across 50 exquisite ensembles for men and women, a welter of hand techniques such as hand knitting, crochet, hand-machine embroidery, and shuttle needle-lace technique are the mainstay of designs.

Nirmooha Preeti Jain

Inspired by the frayed facades, antique wallpapers seen at various heritage properties, the pieces reflected the old world charm and stealth chic of the forgotten attics and hidden spaces. Superimposing old-school glamour with an au courant touch, designer Preeti Jain’s ‘Ancienne’ collection comprises her signature Nirmooha statement-making prints reconciled with the vintage-inspired array of easy chic separates. she revives classicism with a touch of modernity and glamour.

Aisha Rao

Aisha Rao’s collection transcended to a bucolic dreamland imagined with fantastical prints, textures & happening colors. Beautifully vibrant, powerful, and true to the brand’s eco-minded métier, Rao’s new line-up combines slow, planet-conscious fashion with unrestrained glamour.

The high octane event was heightened to a degree of drama by soulful music and energy, which can only be matched by the power of the creation. Ace designer, Tarun Tahiliani pointed out that we have the luxury of time in India because our craftsmen work for far modest rates. “Therefore, many things are possible here that would not be possible abroad at these price points,” he added.
