Shaping BJD’s New Identity: Studio Lotus blends Heritage and Modernity in Odisha

Studio Lotus has transformed the Biju Janata Dal headquarters in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, from a planned five-storey structure to a more community-oriented three-storey design, blending modernity with local heritage.

For over twenty years, Biju Janata Dal has driven Odisha’s development. Their new Bhubaneswar headquarters reflects this with a three-story design, promoting accessibility and community connection, rather than the initially planned five stories.

The facade, developed with Siddhartha Das Studio, showcases Sambalpuri and Ikat weaving to emphasize the cultural essence driving the office. “We aimed to blend tradition with modernity, not just replicate it,” explains Sidhartha Talwar of Studio Lotus.

The elevated ground plane forms a plinth for public events, enhancing street interaction and blurring public-private boundaries. It features a cafeteria, library, and 360° audio-visual gallery. The laterite and terracotta facade provides natural insulation and integrates sustainable elements like rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and solar panels.

The facade, designed with Siddhartha Das Studio, features hand-chiseled laterite reliefs that reflect Odisha’s agricultural and cultural heritage. Inside, Dhokra metalwork and sculpted khondalite benches showcase local craftsmanship and enhance the space’s contemporary yet traditional feel.

This three-story building embodies sustainability with natural light, heat-reducing terraces, internal courtyards, and eco-friendly features like solar panels and rainwater harvesting.

As per Principal Architect Siddharth , “Designed to bridge the gap between bureaucracy and the public, it creates a vibrant community hub with a sense of shared ownership.”
