Renesa’s House of Gond Blending Modern Design with Heritage

Renesa’s House of Gond in Pune merges modern design with Kerala’s nalukettu style. The inviting apartment features an airy courtyard layout and southern Indian elements. Founded by Sanjay Arora and his son Sinchit in 2006, Renesa is known for diverse projects across India.

Renesa, an architecture firm, aimed to merge modern aesthetics with elements from India’s historical homes in a Pune apartment. Designed for fashion designer Monica Gaur, a connoisseur of Kerala’s traditional crafts and architecture, the House of Gond reflects this rich cultural heritage.

The design favors an open layout, with living and dining areas connecting to a central hall, while three bedrooms remain private. Traditional southern Indian elements, such as Karaikudi tile flooring and columns inspired by Chettinad mansions, enhance the space. The architects blend intricate carvings and rich woodwork to create an understated yet luxurious living environment.

Upon entering, a stunning hallway with bold black-and-white tiles and vintage chandeliers sets the tone. Vibrant patterned tiles in the living areas add contrast. A doorway leads to a spacious principal suite with a dressing area, shower room, and private lounge opening to a balcony. The bedrooms feature wooden ceilings, four-poster beds, and warm Pichwai upholstery.

Curated artworks, including Rajasthani pots and antique masks from Kochi, enrich the home with history and personality. “Our aim was to blend traditional art into a contemporary setting,” the studio explained, crafting a space that is both visually captivating and culturally vibrant. Louvred wooden shutters add cohesion, while teak and rattan furnishings bring warmth to the interiors.
