Celebrating the Capitol, Chandigarh: An Inspiring Tribute to Le Corbusier

Celebrating the Contributions of Unsung Architects in Chandigarh, Noor Dasmesh Singh, founder of NOOR Architects draws lifelong inspiration from Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex in Chandigarh, where modernist architecture deeply influences his creative journey.

In his exhibition legacy’Celebrating the Capitol, Chandigarh’. Featuring photographs taken in 2015, it serves as a tribute to Le Corbusier’s Capitol Complex and highlights his dedication to preserving its legacy. The Covid-19 lockdown allowed him to revisit and share these works.

Singh presents ‘Celebrating the Capitol, Chandigarh’, a tribute to Le Corbusier’s modernist marvels, with images captured in 2015 and revived during the lockdown. Established in 1951 as Punjab’s capital, Chandigarh reflects national optimism through Le Corbusier’s design. Singh considers the Capitol Complex a vital symbol of India’s architectural identity.

An exhibition curated by Singh for early 2025 will celebrate unsung Indian architects like Eulie Chaudhary, MN Sharma, Shivdatt Sharma, and AR Prabhavalkar. The exhibition aims to highlight their vital contributions to Chandigarh, showcasing their dedication to this ambitious urban project over more appealing prospects abroad.

‘Celebrating the Capitol, Chandigarh’ opened on October 5th at the Open Hand monument, in collaboration with the University of Cambridge and others. Dr. Christopher Turner highlighted the city’s modern architecture as a symbol of progressiveness despite its colonial legacy. Singh urged residents to reclaim public spaces, emphasizing that active citizen engagement is essential for cities to reflect their modernist legacy.
