Around 1000 SMEs set up in Himalayan terrains of Kargil – Leh to generate employment : KVIC

In order to generate employment opportunities and support artisans in the rough terrains of Himalayas, specifically in Leh and Kargil region, at least 1000 local small and medium manufacturing units have been established under PM’ s Employment General Programme (PMEGP) 2017 which has created over 8200 jobs for as informed by The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC).

 
According to the Commission, the program has enabled the establishment of various  sectors such as wooden furniture, wood carving, tailoring units, hard good metals, jewellery manufacturing and automobile repairing and others. KVIC has reportedly helped setting up about 26 new projects in Leh during the lockdown as pandemic hit the MSMEs. 
 
KVIC, being the nodal implementing agency for PMEGP Scheme has been working towards the development of the region with new founded vigour after the bifurcation of the state from Jammu and Kashmir.
 
As per the statement issued by Commission, “From 2017-18 to 2020-21 (up to September 30), KVIC established 802 projects in Kargil and 191 projects in Leh region creating 6,781 jobs in Kargil and 1,421 jobs in Leh, respectively. While KVIC disbursed Rs 26.67 crore as margin money for these projects in Kargil, it disbursed Rs 5.68 crore in the Leh region during this period.”
