Bengaluru’s Pottery Town: A Living Legacy of Artisanal Tradition
Nestled in the heart of Benson Town, Bengaluru’s Pottery Town stands as a testament to the enduring power of craftsmanship and tradition. This historic neighbourhood traces its roots back over a century when artisans from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh arrived in the city, drawn by opportunities created by the Mysore Wadiyars, who controlled Bengaluru during that era. These potters initially crafted for the royal dynasty, passing their skills down to younger generations, eventually establishing a thriving hub for pottery.
By 1926, the artisans of the Kumbara community formally established Pottery Town, creating a space to honour and sell their work. Today, around 40 families reside in the area, with 20 of them actively continuing their pottery traditions, despite the challenges of time and changing consumer habits.

Pottery Town offers a variety of handcrafted ceramics, including pots, mugs, diyas, and Ganpati idols. The artisans are busiest during Diwali and Ganpati seasons, preparing hundreds of festive items for celebrations across the country. Tourists and locals alike flock to the area to experience firsthand the craft’s beauty and heritage.
Challenges and the Fight for Survival
The Pottery Town’s journey has not been without obstacles. In 2018, the community faced an existential crisis when their lease agreement with the government neared expiration. Though the artisans had secured the land for their working sheds through an agreement in 1976, time took its toll. The infrastructure deteriorated, customer demand dwindled, and only a small number of potters remained active. With fewer buyers and rising uncertainty, the artisans feared for their future.
However, the Kumbara community refused to let their craft fade away. As a way to boost income and sustain their legacy, the artisans began offering pottery lessons for tourists. For ₹200, visitors can now learn how to create cups, diyas, and other pieces under the guidance of experienced local potters. This initiative has sparked renewed interest, drawing influencers and tourists to Pottery Town, further cementing its reputation as a cultural hotspot.
