Camp Kharu: Celebrating Ladakhi Heritage and Eco-Friendly Innovation

Perched along the Indus River on the Leh-Manali highway, Camp Kharu is created by the Royal Enfield Social Mission, Rural Development Department, Kharu Nambardar, and local partners. This two-story cafe & restaurant blends Ladakhi heritage with eco-friendly design, offering travelers a unique retreat that echoes the charm of historic Silk Road teahouses.

At Camp Kharu, Leh-based artist Tsering Motup Siddho shared illustrated cards on Ladakhi utensils and recipes, part of his local kitchens series. Upstairs, a women’s group served traditional Ladakhi dishes. The event highlighted Camp Kharu’s role in cultural exchange and community support, echoing the spirit of Silk Road teahouses.

Positioned at a crucial crossroads in Ladakh, Camp Kharu brings together tradition and eco-conscious design. Inaugurated in June, this ‘green pitstop’ features a café, an exhibition area, and public restrooms.

Camp Kharu, a two-story rammed earth building along the Indus River, blends striking design with sustainability. Created by the Royal Enfield Social Mission, Rural Development Department, Kharu Nambardar, and local partners, it celebrates Kharu’s travel history while offering eco-friendly amenities, guided by Sandeep Bogadhi’s local expertise.

At the opening event, Bogadhi highlighted the building’s sustainable features, joined by Rahul Bhushan of North, who is also developing a Royal Enfield pitstop in Himachal Pradesh. At Camp Kharu, Sandeep Bogadhi’s design uses large south-facing windows to harness sunlight and frame views of the Indus River and Zanskar Mountains, embodying Ladakhi respect for solar orientation and natural beauty.

Setting up Camp Kharu involved training local women in hospitality and entrepreneurship, and the space will also serve as a gallery for local artists.

Camp Kharu aims to transform this by fostering local involvement and pride in maintaining high standards.
