Chennai Celebrates National Handloom Day with Textile Showcase

The Crafts Council of India is hosting a textiles and accessories showcase on August 9th and 10th at Chennai’s MRC Centre. Timed with National Handloom Day, this event will feature over forty exhibitors, including top artisans and designers, offering a glimpse into India’s diverse textile heritage.

Explore a variety of handcrafted items at the exhibition. Highlights include Vimor’s vintage silk cotton sarees, Pracheen’s handblock prints, and Ramkumar Halder’s Dhakai jamdanis. Also on display are Kaayaa’s contemporary kurtas, Hiranya’s Indo-Western styles, Piar’s embroidered co-ords, and Anavila’s latest collection in elegant pastels.

The exhibition aims to facilitate direct interaction between customers and the creators of these textiles. Shripal Shah, founder of the Ahmedabad-based brand Asal, emphasized the importance of this connection, saying, “We focus on the traditional practice of making yarn through a ‘takli’ spindle. We hope to raise awareness about the significance of handspun yarn and non-violent silk.”
