Life and Loom : Weaving a meagre life, working fingers to the bone

Since the colonial time until present day, Life of weavers in India has never been easy. Earlier it was draconian rule imposed by British which compelled them in defiance, now it is the staggering indifference of authorities and us all which has led to the ill state of handloom in India.  Many of us still buy handlooms with an acute sense of pity towards weavers or as a token of charity while they should be held with a sense of pride rather than on the margins of mainstream economy.

Why shall we wait for the handloom day to wear something that is but the intrinsic part of our own culture. The pandemic has taken its worst toll on the communities of weavers and artisans owing to the closure of exhibitions and haat bazaars which were hitherto the main places to sell their produce for they are still ill acquainted with technology. Therefore many of us are completely astray and forced to pick up odd vocations like selling vegetables, pulling rickshaws to earn their keep.

Though many online initiatives have been taken to give a leg up to the handloom sector but they all seem to have worked well in papers and budget plans of various governments. No one is to blame but ourselves for the grim state of handloom in India as it is our own attitude and buying habits that may bestwon upon them their honour and real worth.
