Marriage of traditional crafts- Ashdeen x Kanakavalli collaboration threads Gara on Kanjeevaram

Though the world of fashion and craft has always been symbiotic, the recent collaboration between fashion maestro Ashdeeen and Kankavalli make the Kanjeevraam bloom like ever with Gara embroidery floral patterns.

There’s a new raft of influential designers bringing new relevance to the old relationship between traditional crafts. With the collaboration between Delhi-based designer Ashdeen and Kanakavalli, the saree brand unfolds an exquisite expression of artistic brilliance.

Earlier the maestro designer has collaborated with many other brands such as Ekaya employing the 200-year-old needlepoint Gara embroidery motifs (which originated in China and was popularised by the Parsis in India) in a contemporary trend.

The time he and Ahalya, founder Kanakavalli deliberated over a year with intensive experimentation with regards to the choice of color, thread, and pattern, to arrive at a language for the 40-piece embroidered collection. The emphasis was to enrich both practices without taming the other.

Interestingly, there are multitudes of artists and craftspeople, and consumers who had been actively involved in the creation. Weavers share their expertise with another cluster, without fretting about the final product. The discernments suggest that a risk-taking artisan can share intimate confidence in the knowledge and skill to co-created a charming piece of textile.
