Under his father’s guidance, Rigzin pursued Buddhist iconography after eighth grade at the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies in Choglamsar, near Leh. Graduating with honors, he gained his father’s approval to sculpt independently in his late twenties, highlighting the meticulous standards required for crafting religious idols.

She begins with a mud and Multani mitti mixture, sun-dries and hardens it, affixes triangular cloth pieces with water, flour, and saresh, hollows out the interior for sacred scrolls, and meticulously paints the deity. The process, spanning months, is influenced by weather conditions, with faster drying in summer posing challenges.

“Precision is crucial, especially for the face and fingers,” Rigzin notes, observing a German student perfecting a hand gesture nearby. “The focus required is almost meditative,” the student adds. Rigzin agrees wholeheartedly. Soon after, he immerses himself in his work, embodying “a zen state of mind” in his artistry.

Rigzin emphasizes that mastery of this art form hinges on patience, enabling him to infuse each sculpture with deep reverence and spiritual meaning, enriching the sanctity of their intended spaces.
