Merging Legacy with Modern Elegance: A Karnataka Home Redefined
In Kundapur, Karnataka, Apeksha Naik of Hiraya Design Studio has created a bungalow that blends traditional and modern styles. Managed remotely by Suchith Shetty from Iowa and his brother Sushruth in Bengaluru, the project highlights a unique fusion of heritage and innovation.
The Shetty brothers’ new bungalow in Kundapur beautifully fuses old and new. Replacing their dilapidated childhood home, architect Apeksha Naik crafted a design that marries traditional charm with modern flair, preserving the essence of the past while embracing a contemporary vision.
The Shettys aimed for minimalist interiors in their Karnataka bungalow, with simple layouts and minimal decor, but wanted plenty of sunlight and spacious social areas. A surprising addition of brick walls in the living room, initially unsettling, ended up adding distinctive character that they were pleased to keep.

Naik infused the Shettys’ bungalow with a blend of Mangalorean and Bawa-inspired design. She combined traditional wooden pillars and concrete jalis with modern touches like red oxide seating and expansive glass openings. A nostalgic sit-out area ties the contemporary design to the home’s rich heritage.
Guided by their love for the land and sustainability, the Shetty brothers worked with Naik to create an eco-friendly bungalow that blends heritage with modern design. Using local materials and climate-resistant finishes, the project successfully balances tradition and functionality, despite the challenges of working across time zones.
