Reviving Vattakad’s ‘Kalithattu’: Major Restoration Project Announced

Studio Maram is set to restore the ancient ‘kalithattu’ at Vattakad Devi Temple, using traditional methods and funded by CSR and crowdfunding. The project will also feature a museum to showcase the restoration efforts.

Restoration of the ancient ‘kalithattu’ structures at Vattakad Devi Temple will begin in August 2024, led by Studio Maram with traditional methods and materials. Funded by CSR and crowdfunding, the project addresses the deterioration under the Travancore Devaswom Board, with the south-side structure collapsing on June 27, 2024.

“Studio Maram will lead the conservation of the ‘kalithattu’ structures, funded through CSR contributions. The restored structures will retain their original design,” said R. Shaji of the Vattakad Devi Temple advisory committee, noting support from TDB member A. Ajikumar.

The ₹1.25 crore restoration project for the ‘kalithattu’ structures, submitted to the TDB on July 22, will use local artisans and traditional methods. With one structure collapsed and the other severely damaged, Studio Maram will reconstruct both using wild jack wood to preserve their original design, as explained by CEO Anand Vishnu B.U.

Mr. Anand announced a museum on the temple grounds to exhibit ‘kalithattu’ materials and artifacts. “We aim to have the ‘kalithattu’ listed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list,” he said.

Studio Maram received national and State Gold Leaf Awards for the Kunjunni Mash Memorial in Thrissur, celebrated for its excellence in Responsible Architecture.
