Structural Engineer from Kerala erects a sturdy house with Coconut Timber, Mud walls and Bamboo Ply

Madhavan Namboodiri, a 75-year-old water management specialist from Kerala used coconut timber and bamboo ply for the construction of his sustainable, eco-friendly habitat.

Madhavan, 75, a native of a rural village called Kuttippuram in Kerala and a civil engineering graduate having advanced training in hydrological modelling and groundwater management  with 50 year of experience in the field of water management, has introduced inexpensive and sustainable ways of living by erecting a house made of coconut roof and mud.

He founded Susthira Bhavanam Foundation in 2019 with the objective to introduce and promote alternative sustainable habitat systems.

His  350-year-old traditional house, indigenously farmed land and associated rural ambience inspired him to find an alternative of  concrete buildings by using traditional elements like coconut timber, bamboo ply and mud in the innovative sustainable habitat as  indiscriminate mining of stones, earth and river sand leads to  frequent natural disasters.

The most amazing advantage of this method is that there is no need to use concrete at any stage of making.Up to two mud blocks could be built in three minutes.

Being a water management specialist, he was approached by Hamza Kakkadavath to solve the water scarcity issue in his land before building his dream house. Using rainwater harvesting techniques, the water from the roof of the house would be filtered and stored including  other features such as greywater recycling and passive cooling.

Even though the new method was eco and budget friendly, Madhavan Namboothiri had to train his workers in building the walls using mud blocks. As per Madhavan Namboothiri the methold inflicts almost no harm to nature.
