The Last of the Luthiers: Muralis-Father-son duo from Kerala master the skills of making handcrafted Violins

Run by Murali ED And Vinay Murali 23, the firm called ‘Fiddle Crafter Luthiers’  in Chendamangalam near Kochi has remarkably impacted the Violin market in India By championing the making and repair of Handcrafted Violins.

Most of the violin players in India regret that they have to buy violins overseas because Indian made Violins are not compatible with western tones but Vinay Murali 23, and his father has busted the myth by filling this gap.

They have innovated a fully hand-crafted violin with German woods under the label Fiddle Crafter Luthiers. As of now, they have carved the copies of famous ancient violins like Stradivarius, Guarneri, Nicola Amati, Nicolas Lupot, etc.

Murali junior was fascinated by making and repairing the violin because it was a family legacy. His father has an experience of over 40 years in making & repairing musical instruments and he taught him to repair violin, viola, and cello.

Apart from his father’s teachings he also attended some violin making workshops of internationally-renowned Master Luthier James Wimmer with his father. As per Vinay, the workshops were arranged by Lalgudi trust, Chennai and gave them very crucial insights about violin instruments and its minute technicalities.

The workshop trained us to prepare hand-made violin from scratch and it was not less than a milestone in the history of Indian music. As a result of this training, we successfully prepared hand-made copies of the 1702 Stradivarius violin, first designed by Antonio Stradivari in Italy.

Today their business has gained distinction because of the peculiarity to make fully handcrafted violins. Without using any machinery, presently they are making violin, viola, cello, electro-acoustic violin, baroque violin like 5,6,7,8 stringed type (also known as sympathetic violin), etc.
