Unveiling the Legacy of Chitpur Lithographs

The exhibition ‘Chitpur Chronicles: A Journey through Sacred Imagery’ showcases rare Chitpur lithographs that blend traditional religious themes with modern print technology. Curated by MATI, it runs until September 30 at Naivedyam basement, Hauz Khas Village, New Delhi.

“Lithography revolutionized the spread of visual culture in India, making religious imagery accessible and fostering a shared aesthetic experience across regions,” remarked Siddhartha Tagore, founder of MATI. The exhibition features divine representations of Hindu deities, including Beenapani (Saraswati), Jagaddhatri Mata, and the powerful Sri Sri Dashabhuja, highlighting themes of familial and cosmic harmony.

The exhibition showcases powerful works like Papir Shasthi (Punishment to Sinner) and scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, emphasizing valor and divinity. Gaurav Kumar, MATI’s curator, highlights the vivid colors and mass production of Chitpur lithographs, which democratized access to religious imagery. Chitpur became a 19th-century hub of lithographic innovation, home to many renowned printing houses.

Together, they crafted a visual legacy that encapsulated late 19th and early 20th century Bengal’s cultural landscape.

Chitpur emerged as a dynamic artistic hub, blending tradition with modern technology and making art accessible to a wider audience. Gaurav Kumar highlights how skilled artisans transformed local studios into centers of lithographic innovation, producing vibrant prints that spread visual culture throughout Bengal, solidifying Chitpur’s place in Kolkata’s artistic legacy.
