Varanasi-Haldia inland waterways project in Ganges in full swing

The navigation infrastructure in river Ganga stretching from Varanasi to Haldia  which is also known as the National Waterway 1 (NW-1) is gaining traction as  National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) to submit a report on issue of environmental impact of the project.

According to Ministry of shipping, the Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP) on the above mentioned stretch is estimated at cost of Rs 5,369.18 crores (USD 800 million) and  is being executed in collaboration with the World Bank’ s assistance on 50:50 sharing basis with government of India.

The project after successful implementation will open a multimodal river transport terminal and its integration with NW-2   will facilitate the MSMEs in the northeast region by offering them the gateway to the countries in Southeast Asia and presenting the opportunities to export goods to the region.
