World Bank funded apparel sector apprenticeship scheme aims at improving MSMEs productivity

Recently, about 77 apparel manufacturing units in Chennai and Tiruppur clusters have collaborated with the Apparel Training Design Centre (ATDC), the training arm of Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) for an apprenticeship program funded by the World Bank to improve the productivity of MSME clusters.

The three months classroom training program will impart skills to at least 240 apprentices concerning industrial value enhancement in apparel sector, which will be followed by on the job training for one year. A stipend of ₹ 4,500 to ₹ 9,000 per month will be offered as remuneration during whole year of on-job training, as informed by A. Sakthivel, Chairman, AEPC in a press release.

The skill training program is likely to generate employment opportunities for trainees who would acquire relevant skills required by various manufacturing units.The ATDC also planned to establish industry apprenticeship initiative cell and expand the work of training of trainers through apparel, home furnishing sector skill council under other such projects.

The whole project has received the funding of ₹ 2,200-crore from World-Bank and will be undertaken by Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship with the objective of improving the productivity of MSME clusters and prepare them for export demand.
