It’s both Compostable and Edible: Coimbatore man creates food containers from Rice Bran

The packaging of your ‘food to go’ may no longer need to soil the environment as S Kalyan Kumar from Tamil Nadu has invented a device that can create Eco-friendly Containers from Rice Bran that can be consumed as fodder by cattle.

As we look right in the face of an impending climate crisis, a new generation of manufacturers and scientists has long been working to tackle the global plastic waste crisis head-on.

In pursuit of tackling the menace of a BBA dropout from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu has come up with innovative equipment that turns natural wastes into single-use packaging products. He uses unusual products as raw materials such as rice and wheat barn, banana leaf, tubers, millet waste, tamarind seeds, and wood pulp.

The intriguing thing about the equipment is it doesn’t require any particular kind of natural waste, it can transform 15 different biodegradable waste to roll out 10 different types of containers from glasses, boxes, flask, dishes, and whatnot.

The MP from Kerala, Shashi Tharoor also recently shared an informative video about biodegradable and eco-friendly containers made from rice bran.

He retweeted the video which was originally shared on Twitter by Principal Secretary Environment Climate Change & Forests of Tamil Nadu, Supriya Sahu and urged the Central government to provide incentives to ramp up their production.

This applies across the country and not just TN. Various such innovations are in the works that would replace plastics with recyclable, bio-degradable materials. GoI needs to provide incentives to scale up production of such eco-friendly alternatives for daily use,” tweeted Tharoor.

The video shows how a man showcases different products made from rice bran. He then goes on to show food containers, small cups and glasses that can be used as an eco-friendly alternative for plastic containers.

At present he is getting orders of nearly 10 lakh such cups in a month, he intends to impart the skill to other manufactures through workshops and live demonstrations.
