NIFT Srinagar to introduce technical textiles as academic subject

National Institute of Fashion and Technology (NIFT) will endeavour to introduce a new research driven course in production and textile design to go beyond conventional fashion textiles.

Jammu and Kashmir has long been the breeding ground for Weavers, artisans, and craftsmen working in the handloom and handicraft sector and budding fashion designers across the country always look up to local craftisans for revitalize their creative vein.

Asserting the role of NIFT in the textile designing Smriti Irani, Union Minister for Textiles and Women & Child Development said during the convocation ceremony, “The first batch of NIFT Srinagar has added a golden page in the history of the institution. The students should be prepared for whatever life has to offer and the training imparted to them at NIFT, they would be equipped to deal with any tests and hardships that may come their way.”

National Institute of Fashion Technology will work to incorporate a formal course in technical textile in the campuses across India to widen the scope of opportunities for fashion entrepreneurs.

Apart from this there is also a need to  develop entrepreneurial and business skills while studying. Students often receive guidance on developing an online presence where they can showcase their professional portfolios.Alumni of NIFT Srinagar can play a pioneering role in that direction.

The Lt Governor highlighted the significant role of NIFT, Srinagar in creation of Human Capital for the Fashion and Design Industry, besides incorporating the local crafts into the dynamics of the fashion market.

Underscoring the measures taken by Union Territory to promote the local products, the Lt Governor alluded that UT Government is working on GI tagging of Kashmiri carpet, wood carving, Namda craft, Phool Kari, Basohli painting, Tweed fabric, Chikri craft, etc so that these products can be made available in the International Markets.

NIFT has played a vital role in the developing 100 new products through setting up Design Resource Centres in the Weaver’s Service Centres. The products are designed and developed as per the market needs by the students.
