UP govt’s ODOP scheme has trained almost 80,000 thousand artisans

Focused on rapid industrial development of traditional businesses to create employment opportunities and uplift the local artisans, UP govt aspires to become a 1 trillion economy.
 
Having the largest number of micro, small  and medium and enterprises (MSMEs) in India approximately 90 lakhs MSME units which is 14.2 per cent of the total number of MSMEs in the entire country. Uttar Pradesh’s  MSME sector has  generated direct employment for nearly 24.41 lakh people in the last three years,  Additionally, MSMEs contribute around 80 per cent of the State’s exports, which have seen an increase of 35 per cent from nearly Rs 88,967 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 1,20,356 crore in 2019-20. According to Navneet Sehgal, recently appointed Principal Secretary, of handling MSMEs and export promotion. 
 
In a bid to help  entrepreneurs set up new units, a new portal ‘MSME Sathi’ has also been launched by the state government set up 4 lakh new units across the State in its efforts to generate more employment and also help people learn entrepreneurial skills. As many as 90 lakh MSMEs are functional in the state and the sector has been projected as the new growth engine for the economic development of the State.
 

One District One Product (ODOP) is a flagship programme of the state  government launched almost 3 years with the intention of supporting the artisans and the development of clusters of traditional craft, handicraft and small industry in the State by way of providing them the raw material sourcing, technology, packaging and marketing of the products.

Under the training facilities of ODOP initiative many artisans, say from the old wood carving industry of Saharanpur have been trained  which is likely to  improve the product quality as well as productivity.  Apart from this, the programme aims at adding to the income and local employment and is in line with the government’s ‘vocal for local’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaigns.
