Designed by Foliage Architecture, the newly opened Dutch Manor boutique Hotel in Mattancherry is inspired by the traditional wisdom in Kerala’s indigenous architecture fused with intriguing elements of Dutch and Portuguese architecture.
With eleven beautifully curated rooms, each designed to manifest different aspects of the Dutch presence and it’s intersection with the existing Kerala culture, and the unique culture that emerged from it.
An intriguing aspect of Dutch and Portuguese architecture in Kerala is the incorporation of pitched roofs with wooden rafters and trusses, a feature that was already present in traditional Kerala architecture prior to the arrival of European influences.
Kerala’s indigenous building practices included the use of pitched roofs for centuries, designed to suit the region’s tropical climate.

Keeping in mind Dutch sensibilities and elegance, while off-setting it with malabar-style furniture, and block printed soft furnishings, the property bridges the gap between the colonial and local influences to create a beautiful representation of the locale’s culture.
