KNMA’s new building near IGI airport Delhi can be a beacon of architectural and artistic beauty

Designed by the Ghanaian-British architect Sir David Adjaye—known for projects like the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and the Princeton University of Art in collaboration with local architect S Ghosh & Associates,t he centre is scheduled to be opened by 2026, on national highway near IGI airport.

After Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai, Kiran Nadar Museum of Art’s (KNMA’s) new space in Delhi aims to address the neglect of cultural legacy—in terms of both visual and performing arts and educate people in art and culture,

The new KNMA  will include six galleries, having over 10,000 modern and contemporary works. Apart from this, the cultural centre will have studios and two auditoriums having the seating capacity for  700 and 200 people, respectively.

The plan is to host seminars, talks, art courses, workshops, opera, craft shows, and more, making the different aspects of art and culture accessible. According to Roobina Karode, director and chief curator, KNMA,  the museum is designed for movement and repose, to slow down and enjoy, spend time, feel a sense of community, a coming together, a place that invites multiple dialogues and conversations.

Since it is not allowed to build any building above 23m in height near airport  Sir David Adjaye has designed a completely new style of wide spread model for the centre.

The architectural model was showcased simultaneously at KNMA Saket and the 18th International Architecture Exhibition, Venice.

It has taken nearly two years to select the architectural team, through a competition that saw entries from around 70 architects across the world. Five of these, shortlisted, went on to present themes and models. Initially, the plan was to open the museum in Noida.

So whenever Delihites feel the need of cultural nourishment and rest from hectic life, they can soon head to this alluring space in making.
