Plan for more GI tags of tribal products afoot in 2021 as Ministries to collaborate with TRIFED

Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development of India Limited (TRIFED) has been working diligently with Departments and Ministries associated with tribal affairs in various states to upscale the number of geographical indication (GI) tags for scores of regionally developed products and market them intensively.

Covid-19 pandemic has brought the local artisans to a cliff edge, hence observing the potential of India’s rich heritage of indigenous products the focus of centre and states has shifted towards “Vocal for Local” and building an “AatmanirbharBharat”.

TRIFED, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs with active collaboration and support from Lal Bahadur Shastri National Institute of Academy, Ministry of Culture, Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce; India Posts; Ministry of Tourism and Office of the Prime Minister will undertake the task of promoting and branding GI Tag products along with tribal products in order to empower the rural artisans.

As per information of Press Information Bureau, Delhi, TRIFED has selected 8 heritage locations across the country such as Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, Hampi, Karnataka, Golconda Fort, Telangana, Red Fort, Delhi to name a few where GI specific Tribes India stores are likely to be set up.It has also been planned to develop a designer’s lab at Lal Qila (Red Fort), Delhi by Ministry of Culture wherein select tribal artisans will demonstrate rich craft traditions.

The Department of Post is also developing stamps on 6 GI items which will be showcased in this Philatelic exhibition for which lac and gum to be supplied from Van DhanVikasKendras to India Post.
