The Timekeeper: A Lucknow vegetable vendor designs global clock and gifts it to Ram Mandir trust

Designed to denote the time in eight countries at a time, Anil Kumar Sahu has gifted a riveting clock measuring 75 cm to Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, ahead of the consecration ceremony of Ayodhya temple.

The traditional clocks still stimulate the imaginations of designers and contemporary design artists. Their trove of inventive takes on an analog timepiece is anything but old fashioned.

Take a humble vegetable vendor from Lucknow with a knack of designing analog clocks who started working on this clock (75 cm) in October during the Navratri.

The clock designed by Sahu has become the centre of attraction at the vegetable market near the Hahnemann crossing, Gomti Nagar, Lucknow. The clock denotes the time in India, Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Tokyo (Japan), Moscow (Russia), Beijing (China), Singapore, Mexico, Washington DC and New York (USA).

Previously he had gifted such clocks to the Khatu Shyam temple in Lucknow and Kotwa Dham and Kunteshwar Mahadev in Barabanki.

According to him, he made his first clock in 2018, and it was given the ‘certificate of registration of design’ by the Patent Office, Government of India. It would tell the times of India, China, Dubai, Moscow and Tokyo.

This is the first time a public place will have a clock that shows the time of different places across the world at the same time.

In future he has a keen interest in commercially manufacturing such clocks if he could manage the funds because a 75-centimetre diameter clock costs around Rs 3,000 on average.
