Turning Airports into Spaces of Merriment: Mumbai Airport celebrated Kerala’s Spirit in Online Carnival

Having one of India’s biggest art museum entitled  ‘Jaya He GVK’ inside Terminal 2, Mumbai airport recently held a month long virtual festival celebrating the crafts, textiles, folklore and food culture of Kerala.

Spanning across all four levels of terminal 2 of Mumbai airport, the museum showcases more than 5500 pieces of artefacts which include an amusing array of  Mithila paintings to sculptures made by artisan communities of Maharashtra, the museum showcases the culture of India to motley crowd of travelers from across the globe.

In an attempt to redefine the general image of airports from  merely a place of tedium, travel and get jet-legged to something that is inviting and  exudes aesthetic charm, authorities, last year decided to hold carnivals to celebrate the rich history of each region of the state in month-long celebrations.

The third edition of the 30 day carnival called Aaghosham 2021  was kicked off on 18 May and ended on June 18. The online event put to public display through Jaya he app and website, a completely refreshing panorama of the Kerala’s culture encompassing imposing architectures, textile, jewellery, cuisines and traditional art forms like Theyyam and Kalarippayattu.

Besides art the backwaters and literature were also the main highlights. Narrating the tales of  Perumthachan and other lores from the state, storytelling sessions by Sherline Pimenta of Kathanika,  engaged many children between 12 and 14 years from a BMC school.
